News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Sept. 26, 2024

Somerset Bible Chapel

Sunday, Sept. 22, the worship service opened with announcements. The music team of Emery and Katie DeRoo led off with “Come, Now is the Time to Worship”, “Jesus Paid It All”, then “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”, “All The Way My Saviour Leads”, “(Ps. 121) I Lift Up My Eyes” by Brian Derksen and, in closing, “Your Will Be Done”.

Abe Klassen was the usher.  Clayton Kimber led the Prayer Focus. Isabel read the Scripture lesson 1 John 1:1- 2:6. Ernie Unrau was the guest speaker.

“Priority Principles” was the sermon title. His introduction, with a video clip of a stunt man who had a belief that he could prove the world was flat (Mad Mike Hughes 1956-2020), illustrated that if one does not have a correct foundation for the understanding, interpretation, and application of information, their flawed perspective flows all the way through.

The key text, 1 John 2:1-2, gives a Prohibition, a Proponent, and a Propitiation.

The Christian is called to not sin (prohibition), and is not given permission to sin even though God offers grace to the sinner. The Christian has a Paraclete, an Advocate, an intercessor to represent him in Judgement. Jesus Christ became the perfect sacrifice to appease the anger of God against all confessed sin.

Many supporting references identified that sin is lawlessness, that everyone is guilty of disobeying God’s commandments and deserves punishment. No one can claim to be without sin (1John 2:3-6). “A Christian ought to walk like Jesus”.

After the closing song, the benediction was Psalm 1:1-6 with a closing prayer that we can be fruitful trees as in the psalm.

There are sign-up sheets in the foyer regarding the Thanksgiving Supper on October 20 and also for providing snacks for the Youth Group (for about 40 people at each meeting).

Rachel gave an update on preparing Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. The September focus is on collecting hygiene and personal items. The October focus will be on writing enclosure letters and decorating shoeboxes. The November Super Sunday, Nov. 3rd, will be a packing party in the lower hall.

Brianna will soon be starting Mat leave from her position as Youth Coordinator. We look forward to rejoicing with them shortly in the birth of their first child.

A reminder in church Sunday morning that the balcony is not a children’s play place. The set-up for the audio and video for the Baby Room was disturbed for the Sunday before.

Mention was made of the passing of Dale Chanel, father of Tom Chanel who has been involved in some of the church ministries in recent years. https://www.afh.ca/obituary/Dale-Chanel
