News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Sept 17, 2026
Somerset Bible Chapel
Sunday morning September 13th was a chilly one with the first fall risk of frost overnight. However the day was sunny, the music was upbeat, and the enthusiasm of the students was high for the beginning of the new season of Sunday School classes.
Ernest Unrau gave the Announcements. Rejean and Carol Picard were the music team. Erik Picard was usher. Michelle Friesen read a hymn story and also the Bible lesson from Exodus 20:1-11. Rick Ross led the Prayer Focus.
Rejean began with an opening prayer, then led ‘I Lift Your Name”, “All Heaven Declares” and “Blessed Assurance”. The hymn story was about Keith Green and the writing in 1977 of “There is a Redeemer”. “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”, “I Surrender All” and “You Are my All in All” continued the set.
The guest speaker for the day was Evan Unrau. “Commandments 1-4: Relationship of Man to God”.
In the Gospels there are two exchanges where the question of the greatest commandment is under discussion. Luke 10:30-37 Jesus asks a lawyer the question and the lawyer quotes the declaration in Deuteronomy 6:4-5. “You shall love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
In Mark 12:32-33 a group of religious leaders approach Jesus and ask the question. The answer is the same.
Exodus 20 sets out specifics. There is only one God. Do not make any idols (substitutes for God). Do not misuse His name. Observe the day of rest for it belongs to the Lord. The other six commandments deal with relationships with people.
Why does it matter? Jesus used the words from Deuteronomy and Leviticus to give a precise summary. He taught that all the law and the prophets support the statement. Christians then are to know God, to follow the commandmants, to walk in His Ways. In John 14 - Jesus’ teaching at The Last Supper before his crucifixion - several references to love between God and man set up a pattern. Proof of love is doing what he asks.
Evan read 1 John 4:7-21 to give a fuller explanation of the Love of God through his people. The service closed with “The River” and Evan read the benediction.
Youth Group will begin Sept. 23.
