The last Sunday of September, the 27th, was definitely looking to be fall, with bright sunshine and lots of fall colours in the landscape. Many of the regular families travel 15-45 minutes so travel conditions are important.
Erik Picard went over the announcements for the days to come. Kevin and Michelle Friesen led the music for the worship service. Matt Penner served as usher. Kevin F led the Prayer Focus. Rachel Picard read the Bible lesson from Matthew 5:17-20.
The music selections included “Come Thou Fount”, “My Hope is Built”, “Rescuer” for the first set, “Jesus Messiah”, “Lord, I Need You”, “What He’s Done” for the second set and “How Great is our God” (The splendor of the king - first line) for the closing.
“The Law” was the theme of Abe Klassen, guest speaker for the day. He chose to cover some of the basics. In his work with an agricultural company he supervises college students on summer work. Some have no experience with farm equipment. The orientation includes learning to look around to see if there is any obvious problem.
At the time of Jesus’ earthly ministry, the people of Israel had acquired some erroneous views of the Law taught in the Old Testament. Abe read Psalm 19:1-14 and Psalm 119:1-14, 97-104 to highlight the basic role of The Law as teacher.

The Law given to Israel was associated with the land they were to occupy and enjoy. Penalties for not honouring the law included exile from the land. In the New Testament Christ fulfilled the law in the sense of being superior or greater than before.
The distinctive identity of the Hebrew nation becomes the distinctive identity of Christians from every tribe and nation. The small nation of Israel becomes the New Heaven and New Earth spoken of in the New Testament as the inheritance of the people of God.
The new law in Christ is concerned with the heart and becoming one with Christ. The epistles of John in the Bible describe how to behave in God’s kingdom.
