News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Oct. 8, 2026

Somerset Bible Chapel

Sunday morning Oct. 4, the worship service opened with Church Chair Jamie Grenier presenting the announcements. Jonathan Timmerman served as usher. Rick Ross led the Prayer Focus. Clayton Kimber did the Scripture reading from 1 Corinthians 12:12-27.

Ernest and Lorna Unrau were the music team. All selections were from the hymn book. They chose “O Worship the King”, “Thou Art Worthy”, “To God Be The Glory”, “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, then a set with a 2 part round song “Behold What Manner of Love”, “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing”, “Majesty”, “They’ll Know We are Christians by our Love”, and “We Will Glorify”. The Closing song was “Blest Be the Tie That Binds”.

Speaker for the day was Kevin Friesen. On behalf of the elders board he presented a message “To Whom Do You Belong?”. Centered on the theme of church membership, Kevin pointed out several key factors.

The earliest example of a church community is in Acts 2:40-42. At that time people lived in communities: the family, the neighbourhood, occupation, and religious life were all very connected. The believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, prayers and breaking of bread.

In North America we live in a very individualistic culture.

In our day, church membership shows a loyalty: These are my people. We are committed to one another and are interdependent. We are responsible for one another. We help each other grow. We resolve differences. We share burdens. We rejoice and celebrate together.

Church membership says that we are on a mission together. To receive nourishment for soul and spirit, to serve and worship and pray together, to care for the widows, to encourage, etc. by first showing up for the occasions when the church gathers together.

The church is described as a body, every member has a role in the health of the whole. Membership identifies those who accept this responsibility. The biblical kind of belonging is way bigger than any merely human connection. How does the Christian demonstrate what that means?

Pastor Jeff Peacock and family have been on vacation the last several Sundays. Many thanks to the men of the congregation who have filled in as pulpit supply.
