News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Oct. 31, 2024

Somerset Bible Chapel

The worship service Sunday, October 27 was led by Ernie Unrau. The music included selections from the hymn book as well as scripture songs (Bible content set to music).

“Oh, How I Love Jesus”, “Nothing But the Blood”, Galatians 2:20, and “All Hail the Power” made up the opening song service. “We Will Glorify”, “To God Be the Glory, 1 Thess. 5:16-18 “In Everything Give Thanks”, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and, in closing, “I Will Serve Thee”.

In recognition of Pastor Appreciation Month, Elders Clayton Kimber and Kevin Friesen along with Chairman Jamie Small made a presentation to Pastor Jeff Peacock with a prayer of blessing. Pastor Jeff continues his Sabbatical leave until mid January.

Kevin Friesen led the Prayer Focus. The Scripture reading by Abe Klassen was Hebrews 13:1-2 - the beginning of a list of “essential practical ethics of Christian living”.

The guest speaker for the day was Tim Hildebrand, Satellite Director for YFC Pilot Mound. He had visited late August and given an update then on the summer events for youth associated with The Rock Drop-In Centre.  The youth events of the school year are now underway.

Tim introduced 3 John (Third John) as the shortest book in the Bible (by word count). It is one of several single chapter books in the Bible. The brief letter ties in with the series being done by men of the church on 1 John. The epistles of John to the people of the early church give a glimpse of real situations that had developed.

Two characters are identified. Gaius (a very common Roman name) is praised as living well. He is walking in the truth, following God, showing love, hospitality, generosity, enabling those who come teaching truth.

In contrast, Diotrephes is one who desires to be first, rejecting John’s authority, spreading nonsense about him, discouraging hospitality to recommended believers and puts people out of the church that do receive them.

The lessons for present day focused on Encouragement and Hospitality.

The sermon closed with prayer. Kevin Friesen gave the benediction from 1 John 5:20.
