Somerset Bible Chapel

The final Sunday of September, with its beautiful fall colours everywhere, was hot like summer and windy.

Erik Picard did the announcements and the Prayer Focus. Jamie and Brianna Small were the music team. Al Dyck was usher. Rick Ross did the Scripture Reading from 2 John.

No computer video was active so all the singing was from the hymnals in the book racks under the chairs in each row. The opening set was “To God Be The Glory”, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Tis So Sweet To Trust in Jesus”. The next set was “The Love of God”, “Be Thou My Vision” and “It Is Well With My Soul”. The closing hymn was “I Surrender All”.

The speaker for the day was Peter Buhler, Executive Director of Millar College of the Bible, Winnipeg campus. 2024 marked the first year for the Winnipeg unit to graduate a class of a full three-year program. The school started in 2020 with a term of evening courses. Day classes were added year by year until a full program was offered.

Night courses continue with this term having 45-50 students, two-thirds of which are retirees. The full-time student body is mostly young adults 18-25 or 30 with some married couples. Some come from out of province (BC to QC). Some are in residence, while others commute to class.

In keeping with the current series in the epistles of John, Peter was asked to teach the short book (13 verses) of 2 John. The emphasis on Love shares focus with Truth in this letter. John’s writing shows his care and concern for the Christians to be bonded together.

His greeting includes the promise of blessing: Grace, Mercy and Peace. He commends those receiving the letter for their Obedience to the Truth. He warns them to be alert to false teachers, especially those who deny the full deity and humanity of Jesus Christ. Jesus needed to be both in order to be man’s representative. Only God can take the wrath of God and survive.

In verse 10, John begins giving specific directions regarding hospitality in such situations. His farewell expresses his desire to be with them in person.
