News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Nov. 7, 2024

Somerset Bible Chapel

Time change Sunday opened with a Super Sunday program. The program took the form of a Shoebox Packing Party for Operation Christmas Child. Tables were set up with goods that had been collected month by month throughout the year. 6 tables were set up for gender and age range for 5 boxes each. A game for folding the flat panels into boxes began the event. Rachel Picard supervised with a prayer at the beginning.

The worship service Sunday, Nov. 3 was led by Emery and Katie DeRoo. The music included “Blessed Assurance”, “Jesus Paid It All”, “This Is Amazing Grace”, “In Christ Alone”, “Jesus Strong and Kind” and, in closing, “All The Way My Saviour Leads Me”.

Abe Klassen was the usher. Clayton Kimber led the Prayer Focus. The Scripture reading by Jamie Small was Hebrews 12:1-11.

The sermon was given by Kevin Friesen. The text was 1 John 3:1-10. This segment of the series discussed the struggle with sin and righteousness in the Christian Life.

Kevin outlined several way that people seek unsuccessfully for assurance of salvation: Legalism, Good works, Belief in anything except Jesus.

Kevin noted that a Christian is part of the family of God by adoption.

The distinction of God’s Children is that they do not make a practice of sinning, but are a work in progress towards reflecting Jesus to their world. That would look like loving others, being kind and generous, having peace, being self-controlled, humble and striving for perfection/completeness.

The evidence of being part of God’s family may become visible to others before one realizes it themselves. Jesus provides a way out when one sins. The work of sanctification is completed in eternity.

The sermon closed with prayer. Kevin then continued on to lead the Communion service. Clayton assisted with serving.

After a “Bring Your own” Lunch, the quarterly congregation meeting was held in the sanctuary.

At 7 p.m. on Friday evening Nov. 15th, two staff members from Creation Ministries International will be presenting “A Tale of Two Histories” and “What the Bible and Science say about the Age of the Earth”. Watch for posters.

These speakers will present “How We Got the Bible” at the men’s breakfast Saturday the 16th.
