News from Isabel Acheson for issue of May 16, 2024

Somerset Bible Chapel

Mother’s Day May 12 included a lunch after the worship service with BBQs on the lawn in front of the church door cooking burgers and hot dogs. Tables were set in the lower hall for the families to gather. The men and children were crew for set-up, serving and clean-up.

The music team was led by Pastor Jeff Peacock with Michayla Peacock and Rachel Picard adding vocals, Kevin Friesen the percussion and Jamie Small at the piano. The music choices were from the Peacock mothers, the Pastor’s mother and wife. “My Hope is Built On Nothing Less”, “Yet Not I, But Through Christ in Me”, “How Deep the Father’s Love”, “Be Thou My Vision”, and “Jesus, Name Above All Names” were included.

The worship service opened with Jamie Grenier, Past chairman, reading announcements. Evan Unrau served as usher. Michayla Peacock read Galatians 3:1-9, and Erik Picard led the Prayer Focus.

The sermon on “Standing Firm for the Faith” pointed out the strong language the author Paul used to admonish the Galatian churches for failing to abide by the truth they had been taught about Salvation by faith alone in the Crucified and Risen Christ Jesus. The primary deceivers wanted to add elements of Jewish practice.

Paul describes the people as “foolish” and “bewitched” for being manipulated in such a way. Pastor Jeff pointed out a current situation where people are making unwise decisions in faith choices.

Gal. 3:2-7 offer a series of questions asking one to verify the faith they have chosen. A faith that includes repentance and believing in the truth being taught. A faith that is perfected by the Holy Spirit within the Christian. A faith that is courageous and confident, fruitful to the Glory of God.

The sermon wrapped up with a lesson taken from The Lego Movie. In a situation where pieces are glued together so they would not be used creatively any more, there comes an illustration of how the sturdiness of the object of a Christian’s faith never leaves.

The closing song was “All Glory be to Christ”, the first line “Should nothing of our efforts…”, and sung to the tune of Auld Lang Syne.
