News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Mar 26, 2026
Somerset Bible Chapel
March 22 this year is the first Sunday of Spring, at least by the Spring Equinox. The sun is warmer and some places have puddles. The next Sunday is Palm Sunday followed by Good Friday and Easter.
The worship service opened with Ernest Unrau reading the announcements. Erik Picard served as usher. Rick Ross led the Prayer Focus. Lorna Unrau read the Bible Lesson 2 Corinthians 9:1-15. Emery and Katie DeRoo were the music team.
The Call to Worship was Psalm 150. The opening song “How Can I Keep From Singing” was followed in the second set by “His Mercy is More”, a reading from Jeremiah 31:3, “The Love of God” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”.
Pastor Jeff Peacock led off the sermon with the statement “How We Use Our Finances Matters”. Chapter 9 of 2 Corinthians builds on the message of Ch. 8. In that chapter Paul had been boasting to the Macedonian churches about the generosity to the Achaian churches. In Chapter 9 he is boasting of the generosity of the Macedonian churches even though they have little and are under deep affliction. Paul is urging the Corinthian church to have ready when he comes the offering they had pledged for the needs of the saints in Jerusalem.
Paul relates the benefits of giving to the work of the Lord to the work of sowing and reaping. Those who give generouly, cheerfully, willingly, according to their own resources, give without regard for personal gain. A related verse in Malachi 3:10 speaks of blessings to be received so that in due time “there will be no more need”.
Much of Paul’s teaching in this portion focuses on financial matters, but he also calls for the gift of prayer for one another, and, for the other churches. The chapter closes with a doxology of praise “Thanks be to God for his inexpressable gift”.
The closing hymn was “Be Still and Know that I am God”. The benediction picked up the phrase from Psalm 46:10-11.
Good Friday, April 3, will be observed with a 9 a.m. breakfast at the church and by a worship service. Easter Sunday events will be the usual Sunday School at 9:30 (classes for all ages) and worship service at 10:30 a.m.
