News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Mar 19, 2026
Somerset Bible Chapel
On a cold (for March normals) sunny Sunday morning March 15, church families gathered for Sunday School classes and the regular worship service.
The worship service opened with Jamie Grenier giving the announcements. Pastor Jeff Peacock and Alanna were the music team, with Pastor Jeff leading the Prayer Focus as well. Abe Klassen was usher. Clayton Kimber read the Bible lesson from 2 Corinthians 8:1-5.
The congregational singing for the day began with a call-and-answer song “I will not be Shaken” a Day Camp favourite, “Jesus Messiah”, the great Swedish “How Great Thou Art”, “Living Hope”, “Faithful One” and “Rock of Ages”.
The teen youth group is the Ministry of the Month. Pastor Jeff complimented the families that are discipleing their children in Bible knowledge. The prayer request was for the volunteer leaders and the planning for the coming months.
The sermon studies in 2 Corinthians moved into Chapter 8 verses 1-15, “Encouragement to Give Generously”. Chapters 8 and 9 are Paul’s instructions to the church in Corinth about a collection for the saints in Jerusalem. He lays out a template for giving in the church.
Paul wants to let them know about the generosity of the churches in Macedonia, the northern province of Greece. The churches at Philippi, Thessalonica and Berea were in an impoverished province that had been ravaged by wars and pillaged by Roman rulers and traders.
Paul’s message is that generosity is not limited by poverty or severe test of affliction. Generosity comes with a joy that is a confident conviction of God’s care and keeping.
The pattern was a combination of one’s own free will, giving according to one’s means, occasionally giving beyond one’s means (while still being good stewards of one’s resources), and, choosing a lifestyle that gives priority to church (the first fruits).
The Macedonian Christians begged for the favour of being able to take part in the relief of those in need. Those with abundance should supply their own needs and be able to assist others. In time the need may be reversed, and in fairness all are cared for.
The service closed with the Doxology and the Benediction.
