News from Isabel Acheson for issue of July 6, 2023

Somerset Bible Chapel

Canada Day weekend Sunday July 2nd is a popular camping weekend and some families were away, while others had visitors. Kevin Friesen opened with announcements, led the music team, led the Prayer Focus and provided interlude music for the Communion service part of the worship service.

Opening music included “This Is Amazing Grace” and “Blessed Be The Name”, Communion song was “His Mercy is More”, and later “”Yes, I Will” and “10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)”.

The new bulletin for July identifies Summer Ministries as the Mission of the Month. Day Camp is held July 17-21 with morning sessions at the church and some of the afternoon skill sessions at other locations. Vacation Bible School (VBS) is set for July 31- Aug. 3 with late afternoon sessions at the church.

The sermon by Pastor Jeff Peacock used Jeremiah 29:11 in the series on “Coffee Cup Verses”. The verse reads “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” It is part of a letter to the exiles of Judah captive in Babylon about 600 BC. Pastor Jeff read a number of other verses in the chapter to give the historical setting, the specific audience addressed, and, specific prophecies related to the exile (and later restoration).

Though Jeremiah’s letter was written for another time and place it can teach people today that we have a faithful God, that we have loving God who loves His children deeply, far beyond our merits, and, that we have a Sovereign God who is completely in control.

The Mesopotamian culture of the time was one of dominance over and assimilation of other nations. The idea of Judah being restored as indicated by Daniel and Nehemiah, other Old Testament writings, was completely out of character.

The sermon closed with prayer, the closing song was “”What Blessed Assurance”, and the Benediction was 2 Peter 3:18 (But grow in grace…).
