News from Isabel Acheson for issue of July 25, 2024

Somerset Bible Chapel

The congregation returned to the sanctuary on Sunday, July 21, after the outdoor service the week before with the Church Family Camping weekend.

The Worship Service opened with Jamie Small giving announcements. Pastor Jeff Peacock was the music leader with Jamie S. and Kevin F. stepping in to assist.

The songs for the day included “10,000 Reasons”, “Here is Love”, “Amazing Grace” “There is a Redeemer” and “Jesus, Name Above All Names”.

Byron Timmerman served as usher. James Friesen led the Prayer Focus. Bill Acheson did the Bible reading Galatians 5:22-23.

Pastor Jeff Peacock concluded his series on the “Fruit of The Spirit”. “Gentleness and Self-Control” complete the nine qualities of the Spirit-filled Christian.

The Greek word for gentleness, in this usage, implies a mildness and meekness (but not weakness); a strength under control. This godly gentleness has no desire for revenge or retribution. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus describes himself as gentle as He brings people alongside Him and shares their load. Pastor Jeff also read out other texts where the same word is used.

Self-control is another key term in developing sanctification as one becomes more like Christ. Self-control is the restraining of passions and appetites. Sinful desires are to be resisted. Non-sinful desires are like the hindrances a runner would lay aside while in a race. Both 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 and Hebrews 12:1-2 use this analogy. Both types of restraint involve making good choices.

The Worship Service closed with the singing of the Doxology.

Following the worship service, many were busy setting up for Day Camp which began the next morning at the church.

The Men’s Breakfast scheduled for July 20 was cancelled. The August meeting is set for Saturday the 17th. A Congregational meeting is set for Sunday, August 18th, at 12:30 p.m. following the morning worship and lunch.

Plans are underway for a 4-day Vacation Bible School (VBS) for ages 4-9, afternoons  3-5 p.m. at the church August 12-16. The Kick-off on Sunday, August 11 will be a Community Carnival from 4:30 to 7 p.m. with free hot dogs and other features.
