News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Jan. 30, 2025

Somerset Bible Chapel

With a bright, mild January morning, Sunday the 26th, the worship service began with Rejean Picard giving the announcements. Pastor Jeff Peacock and Alanna were the music team. Abe Klassen served as usher. Clayton Kimber led the Prayer Focus. Michelle Friesen read the Bible lesson 2 John - The Shortest book in the Bible, only 13 verses.

Pastor Jeff gave a call to worship and opening prayer. The music selections included “Before the Throne of God Above”, “The Wondrous Cross” (a partner song with “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”), “In Christ Alone”, “Holy, Holy, Holy” and “You Are My King”.

Somerset Bible Chapel was the venue Monday the 20th for the funeral of Stephan Talbot of St. Leon. Many of the congregation helped out Sunday the 19th with setting up chairs and Audio-Visual for overflow seating in the lower hall. Others helped with the serving Monday afternoon. Pastor Jeff expressed thanks to all the helpers including those praying for the grieving family. About 175 people attended, and another 275 or so were watching the livestream made available by the funeral home.

“Truth Matters” was the theme of 2 John that Pastor Jeff highlighted as he approached the whole epistle in one go. Readers are called to know the truth, and to stand up for Truth. Ever since Genesis 3, the question “Did God really say” has faced mankind.

The Apostle John teaches that truth is essential to the fellowship of Believers, and guides Christian charity and hospitality. God’s truth abides in them forever enabling steadfastness.

In his expectations of the church, John gives warnings (v.4-6) that not all walk in the truth, in love, in obedience to God’s will. Sometimes speaking the truth means snatching someone from certain disaster. Sometimes teaching the truth seems offensive. (How dare you tell me what to do?)

Verses 7-11 portray truth as the guardrails of love setting limits on hospitality. John concludes with a greeting stating he would rather meet face to face.

The sermon closed with prayer. The Doxology (“Praise God from whom all Blessings Flow”) and Aaron’s Benediction closed the service.

Feb 23 is set for a Parent Dedication for two new babies in the congregation. A soup and salad lunch is to follow, in the lower hall.
