News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Feb 6, 2025

Somerset Bible Chapel

Groundhog Day, Sunday Feb. 2, was cold and sunny. High winds overnight made for some snowdrifts and ‘interesting driving’ for many.

The Worship Service opened with Erik Picard giving the announcements. Jamie and Brianna Small led the music. Kevin Friesen had the Prayer Focus. Rachel Picard was the scripture reader. Erik also served as usher and as a server for Communion.

The song selections included “His Mercy is More”, “10,000 Reasons - Bless the Lord”, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, then “Christ Be Magnified” after Communion and “It is Well With My Soul” in closing.

In beginning the Communion ceremony, Pastor Jeff Peacock thanked the elders who bravely took on that duty during his Sabbatical leave. 1 Corinthians 11:24 concludes with the phrase “for you”. The aim of the suffering and death of Christ was not scattered and random like a shotgun in a goose hunt, but, targeted, specific and effective. It was the price of our Salvation, enabling man to have a way to be reconciled to the Holy God.

The Scripture lesson was 3 John verses 1-4. “Where Does Your Confidence Lie?” Pastor Jeff explored the opening verses of this short epistle. John never identifies himself by name in his writings preserved in the Bible. In this case, he is “the elder”, both in age and position, writing to Gaius who serves in church leadership.

John delights in having received news that the fellowship is known for walking in the Truth. By this, they show where their heart is. John tells them how he prays for them: that all would go well with them, for their physical health and for their spiritual health.

In our day, in our own lives, we are called to live the truth, to pray for one another, to encourage one another, to learn, to grow, to serve and be served. We are called to move, to keep going, to share the message and to do good deeds. Lives will be changed.

In the Sunday School hour, Abe Klassen led the adult class through 2 Kings 17, the account of the Assyrian capture of the Northern Kingdom (Israel) in 722 BC.

Feb 23 is set for a Parent Dedication for two new babies in the congregation. A soup and salad lunch is to follow, in the lower hall.
