Somerset Bible Chapel 

The August 24th worship service opened with Erik Picard reading the announcements.  Kevin and Michelle Friesen were the music team. Abe Klassen served as usher. Pastor Jeff Peacock led the Prayer Focus and Rachel Picard read the scripture lesson from Ruth 2:1-13. 

“His Mercy is More”and “Cornerstone” opened the congregational singing. The next set began with a series of how great God is.  “How Great Thou Art”, “How Great is Our God”, and “Faithful One” were the songs. “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” was the closing hymn. 

Pastor Jeff began the study of chapter 2 of Ruth, “A Stressful Move”. In this section, Naomi begins her return to her home town of Bethlehem. She has become a widow and her two sons have also died leaving their wives to be widows as well. Pastor Jeff recounted a personal story of arriving in a place that “felt like home”. 

Naomi is hardly recognized by the townspeople, without her husband and sons. Ruth is coming to a new land, only knowing Naomi, willing to work at whatever would provide food for them. It is the time of the barley harvest and the landowner had a legal obligation to leave the corners and leftover bits for the needy, the widows, the sojourners.

The theme of God’s provision for His people shines through. Naomi is among family and friends. Ruth is accepted into Naomi’s family. She finds herself in the field of Boaz, a family connection and eligible to serve as a Kinsman Redeemer. Boaz provides safety, food and drink, a place with his reapers beyond what is legally required. 

Pastor Jeff noted that nothing we have is really ours, all we have belongs to God. God the creator provides seed, soil, the natural laws that give provision for growth. When someone is in need, we can’t hold back when we have plenty. 

God’s heart is towards those who are less fortunate. He is a God of provision. Ruth’s loyalty provides for the needs of both widows. Ruth’s name is found in the genealogy in Matthew for Jesus of Nazareth, the baby born in Bethlehem centuries later.  

The benediction was selected verses from Matthew 6:25-34 “Do Not Be Anxious”.
