News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Apr. 17, 2025

Somerset Bible Chapel

With the approach of the Easter season, on Palm Sunday April 13, the worship service began with announcements read by Erik Picard.

Kevin Friesen with guitar, and Brianna Small playing bass led the music. Rejean Picard was the usher for the collection, Rick Ross led the Prayer Focus, Michelle Friesen did the scripture reading from 2 Corinthians 5:17-21.

The music selections included “I Will not be Shaken” (a favourite from Day Camp), “Hosanna - Praise is Rising”, “You Are The God who Saves”, then “Living Hope”, “His Mercy is More” and in closing “How Deep the Father’s Love For Us”.

“Substitutionary Atonement” was the theme of the sermon as Pastor Jeff Peacock skipped ahead in his series from the book of 2 Cor. to speak about the death of Jesus Christ to be celebrated each Good Friday of the Easter weekend.

A substitute is someone who takes the place of another. Atonement is the concept of covering or canceling an offence or injury so as to produce a reconciliation. God provided in his Son Jesus a perfect sinless person to take the place of those who deserve death for their sins.

Isaiah 53:4-6, Romans 5:6-8, 1 John 2:2 and 1 Peter 2:24 were read out by different people in the congregation in relation to the concept. The sin of mankind is described from the time of creation and the first man Adam. Romans 3:21-24 sets out the righteousness of God for all to believe. 2 Cor. 5:17- describes the renewing effect on the believer.

Not only is the believer transformed, he also becomes an ambassador for God, showing the ministry of reconciliation to others. Throughout the passage being studied, the active agent is God the Father. His death bestows a full and complete righteousness on all who believe, on all who are “in Christ”.

Why did God do this? To bring glory to His Name. Also for our sake, on our behalf, to make reconciliation, showing His indescribable love. The worship service closed with an Easter morning scripture.

Good Friday April 18 is to begin with a breakfast at the church at 9 a.m. followed by a worship service.
