News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Mar 20, 2025
Somerset Bible Chapel
The Worship Service for Sunday March 16th was opened with Jamie Grenier giving the announcements. Kevin Friesen with Jamie Small led the music. Kevin F. also led the Prayer Focus. Abe Klassen was the usher, and the Scripture reading was given by Teresa Acheson.
The song selections were all related to having certainty in an uncertain world. A newer song “Today is the Day” with a first line of “I’m casting my cares…” by Lincoln Brewster opened the singing. Other choices were “Count Your Blessings”, Living Hope”, “Faithful Now (first line “I am holding on to faith…”)”and the Brian Derksen selection “Faithful One”.
Following the reading of 2 Corinthians 1:1-11, Pastor Jeff Peacock introduced this book of the New Testament. Despite its title, this is the 4th letter that the apostle Paul has written to the church in Corinth. The two epistles in the Canon of scripture were written in AD 52 and AD 55.
The earlier letters had specifically addressed problems within the church. In this one, Paul is rejoicing because there had been repentance from the wrongs that he had noted with correction and rebuke.
The text for the day is the greeting Paul gives. Chapter 1 clearly preaches the doctrine of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the particular personhood and role of each one. The Father is identified as the Father of all mercies and the God of all comfort.
Comfort implies there has been afflictions, suffering and hardship of some sort. Paul speaks personally in chapter 11:23-33 of his own experiences to that point. One purpose of God’s comfort is for one to be able to comfort another in their affliction.
Later in the letter God reveals to Paul “My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in your weakness”. (2 Cor. 12:9)
The sermon closed with prayer, a closing song “You Are My King”, and the benediction from 2 Cor. 13:14 at the end of the epistle.
The adult Sunday School class is currently studying the kings of Judah. King Hezekiah is portrayed in 2 Kings chapters 18&19, 2 Chronicles 29-32 and in Isaiah 36&37. At the time when the ruler of Assyria was seeking to invade Judah, the details recorded read like current affairs.
