Erik Picard read announcements as the morning worship began on Sunday, June 9. The next Sunday, June 16, is planned as an outdoor service at the Somerset Sportsgrounds at 10 am. with coffee to follow. The summer schedule then kicks in June 23rd with coffee time at 10 am. followed by the worship service at 10:30 am.
Pastor Jeff Peacock was the worship leader assisted by Michayla P., Jamie S. and Kevin F. The song list included “Because He Lives”, “Light of the World”, “Here I Am To Worship”, “Yet Not I, But Through Christ In Me”, “In Christ Alone”, “Only a Holy God” and “All Glory Be To God”.
After the first song, Michayla read I John 1:5-9 (Light and Darkness). Rachel Picard read the Sermon Text from Galatians 5:16-23. Abe Klassen served as usher. Clayton Kimber led the Prayer Focus.
Pastor Jeff addressed the theme “Walk by the Spirit”. The lesson contrasts the desires of the flesh with the desires of the Spirit. The results then contrast as “the works of the flesh” and “the fruits of the Spirit”. The lives of those who belong to God by faith in Christ possess the Holy Spirit within.
The preceding verses (and sermon) referred to freedom from the Old Testament law. This section gives life direction (the boundaries): the actions to avoid and the virtues to develop.
One segment of the sermon addressed the question “Is it sinful to experience temptation?” Jesus never sinned but he did experience temptation. James 1:13-15 outlines the process: temptation lures and entices, desire gives birth to sin, and sin, fully grown, leads to death.
Paul calls readers to “Walk in the Spirit”: to break the cycle, to avoid temptation, to redirect desires, to be moving and growing in spiritual maturity.
The youth group is nearing the end of the school year season with their final Wednesday evening weekly session on June 12. Last Friday the 7th the Boys’ night was for bowling, and, the Girls’ night was a campfire at Friesen Family Farm in the Manitou area.
