News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Oct. 30, 2025

Somerset Bible Chapel

The Sunday morning worship service October 26 opened with welcome announcements given by Rejean Picard. The music team was Emery and Katie DeRoo. The usher was Byron Timmerman. Rick Ross led the Prayer Focus. Jamie Small read the Bible Lesson from Ruth 4:13-22.

For many congregations, October is Pastor Appreciation Month. Somerset Bible Chapel has been fortunate to have Pastor Jeff and Alanna Peacock giving leadership since 2008. Erik Picard, church council chair, told of high school lunch hour visits with Pastor Jeff from that time. Erik made a presentation and a prayer of blessing for Pastor Jeff and Alanna during the worship service.

The songs and hymns included “This is Amazing Grace”, “You Are God Alone” (a lesser known Chris Tomlin song), “Jesus Paid It All”, “Blessed Assurance”(using the traditional Fanny Crosby lyrics in an arrangement by Chris Tomlin) and “Be Still and Know” as the closing hymn.

The Sermon series on the book of Ruth concluded with “God’s Sovereign Control”, the ending verses of chapter 4. Pastor Jeff continued drawing attention to small details that add so much context to the narrative.

Additional Bible passages included Psalm 3, Job 1:20-21, Matthew 1:4-5, and Ephesians 2:11-13.

Pastor Jeff noted the use of the phrase “the Lord gave conception” or “The Lord opened her womb” in reference to the miracle births of Isaac to Sarah, Samuel to Hannah, John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, Jesus to Mary and the child born to Boaz and Ruth. God is in control of every single life. Abortion is not allowed in God’s plan for people.

The baby is seen as the son of Naomi because he will carry on the family lineage of Naomi’s husband and sons through the obedience of Boaz to act as a Kinsman Redeemer in the custom of Levirate marriage.

There is more to the story. The child is named, not by the family, but by the women of the neighborhood. Obed means worship, being a servant. Obed then becomes a part of the Genealogy of Jesus as given in the concluding verses and in Matthew 1:4-5. Both Rahab and Ruth as Gentile women are drawn into the ancestry of the Messiah.
