News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Jan. 16, 2025

Somerset Bible Chapel

A  snowy and windy overnight made for some interesting travel for those trying to get to church Sunday morning Jan. 12. Several families had stories of their adventures!

The worship service opened with Jamie Grenier leading the announcements. The worship team was led by Brianna and Jamie Small. The prayer focus was led by Kevin Friesen. The scripture lesson was 2 Chronicles 20:5-13 read by Isabel.

The music choices were interesting in that the name of the song was seldom found in the first line. For instance: “”This is Amazing Grace” (Who breaks the power), “Nothing But the Blood” (What can wash away), “God So Loved” (Come all you weary), “Living Hope” (How great the chasm) and “The Heart of Worship” (When the music fades). Our readers might enjoy looking up the pieces on YouTube.

The guest speaker for the day was Darrell Teichrib. He brought greetings from the Gladstone Christian Fellowship. His sermon “Turning Fear to Faith” used the narrative in 2 Chron. chapter 20 about King Jehoshaphat of Israel facing a military threat from three surrounding nations.

Living in fear of things real or imagined is not a pleasant life. Humanity was not created for fear or worry. It is God’s desire for humanity not to be left in the grip of fear, but to trust in God’s love and care. Fear keeps us from doing what God has planned for us. Fear very often leads to sin.

Jehoshaphat chose to look for God’s answers in face of threat. He called the nation together for a prayer meeting and acknowledged God’s power and provision in times past.

The response led the king to go out the next day to position his forces on a high place to stand and watch. The opposing forces began fighting among themselves and destroyed each other. The people of Israel spent 3 days carrying out spoil and the 4th day became a day of praise and thanksgiving.

It is always a spiritual battle to turn fear into faith. It always involves Prayer, Surrender, Worship and Thanksgiving. The sermon closed with prayer. The closing hymn was “’Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus”.

Pastor Jeff Peacock is completing his 5 month Sabbatical leave and returns to duties in the next week. Sunday Jan. 19 will be the congregation annual meeting.
