News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Apr. 10, 2025
Somerset Bible Chapel
Jamie Grenier reviewed the announcements to open the worship service for Sunday April 6.
Jamie Small at piano led the praise time beginning with prayer, “Open the Eyes of my Heart” and “Bless the Lord, O My Soul”. Matt Penner was the usher and Pastor Jeff Peacock led the Communion celebration. Elders Rick Ross and Clayton Kimber assisted with serving.
Pastor Jeff led the Prayer Focus. The Mission of the Month for April is the Sunday School. Details about classes and teachers are given in the April bulletin.
“Because He Lives”, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “The Heart of Worship” led to Rick Ross reading the Bible Lesson from 2 Corinthians 2:12-17.
Pastor Jeff opened the sermon with singing the Rick Mullins piece “Hold Me Jesus”. The study of 2nd Corinthians continued with Paul’s narrative of his restlessness in a ministry in Troas, as he was looking for his messenger Titus to bring news of the response in Corinth to the letter Titus had carried to them. Paul proceeds to Macedonia and finds Titus and is encouraged by the news he received.
One lesson pointed out in the sermon was that Paul didn’t continue in preaching in Troas despite having an open door to do so. We can’t walk through every open door when there is a significant concern in another area that requires our attention. Listeners were challenged to examine their view of the world and of the church fellowship. Paul needed to hear of repentance in Corinth.
Verses 14-17 of the lesson are word picture analogies of Triumph in Christ. As a Roman victory parade used incense and flowers strewn on the roadway to be crushed under the cavalry horses feet to produce a pleasing aroma, so the Christian brother or sister is to be a pleasing aroma to God and to those around them.
Pastor Jeff also noted that Paul praised God despite his soul’s unrest. He cited Psalm 34 and Philippians 4:4 with their directive to rejoice in God. The sermon closed with prayer and the worship service closed with the Doxology.
Good Friday April 18 is to begin with a breakfast at the church at 9 a.m. followed by a worship service.
