News from Isabel Acheson for issue of March 7, 2024

Somerset Bible Chapel

Despite a variety of weather alerts leading up to Sunday morning March 3, a good many families were present for Sunday School and Worship Service. Some roads had ice from freezing rain, but the blizzard conditions and road closures of later on in the day had not yet materialized.

The morning announcements were led by Abe Klassen. The March focus for Operation Christmas Child collection is Accessories: Bracelets, Hair items, Bandanas, Painting supplies, Tools, Fishing supplies, Sewing kits, etc.

Pastor Jeff Peacock with guitar led the music team with Rachel Picard assisting with vocals and Jamie Small at the piano. Their song choices were “10,000 Reasons”, “Here is Love”, “Jesus Messiah”, “Only a Holy God” and “There is a Redeemer”.

The Usher was Matt Penner, the Prayer Focus was led by Kevin Friesen, and Pastor Jeff reported briefly on the opportunities he and Byron Timmerman have in coaching high school basketball teams.

The text for the sermon “The Wrath of God Revealed” was Romans 1:13-32. The Sunday School lessons are currently working through the Old Testament book of  1 Samuel and the early kings of Israel. In the last several months, the acts of God’s wrath demonstrate his passionate desire for, and execution of, just punishment for evil.

A series of other Bible references were read related to descriptions contrasting the wrath of God to man’s condition. God’s wrath takes different forms: Eternal (Hell), Eschatalogical (the final day of the Lord), Cataclysmic (the Flood, destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah), Consequential (the principal of sowing and reaping), and, the Wrath of Abandonment (Romans 1:24-32).

The first three chapters of the 16 chapters of the epistle comprise a series of contrasts between righteousness and evil, between salvation and destruction. Rom 1:17-18 contrast the revelation of the gospel with the things that reveal the wrath of God against ungodliness and unrighteousness.

The sermon closed with prayer. The closing hymn was “Amazing Grace”.

The communion celebration was postponed to March 10 which is also the first day of Daylight Saving Time. Don’t forget to check your clocks for Sunday morning!
