News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Jan. 9th, 2024

Somerset Bible Chapel

Greetings of the season to our readers. May you know blessings of peace, joy and contentment in the New Year and a closer walk with the God of the Bible.

Sunday School classes were cancelled for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve Sundays, resuming Jan. 7 at 9:30 am.

Sunday evening Dec. 17th was the annual Christmas Concert. Rachel Picard MC’d the evening. Each class presented a poem, singing, or a skit. Adult class puppet theatre gave a visit with Walter the Camel. Refreshments followed in the lower hall.

The worship service of Dec. 17 included many Christmas carols. Pastor Jeff Peacock read the Lessons from Isaiah 9:1-7, Matthew 4:13-16 and John 1:1-14 all of which speak of God’s light coming to a darkened world.

On Dec. 24th, Christmas Eve day, the candles of the Advent Wreath were completed with the Lighting of the Christ Candle and readings done by members of the Peacock family.

Pastor Jeff began his sermon with the familiar Christmas story from Luke 2:8-20; the warning in Revelation 22:18-19, and Paul’s declaration in 1 Timothy 2:5-6.

The sermon noted the references to angels, the promptness of the shepherds in responding to their news. The Shepherds were close enough to the town to investigate and verify the prophecy. They saw and worshiped. They returned to their work glorifying and praising God.

The final worship service of 2023 on New Year’s Eve day Dec. 31st took place on a sunny, mild morning. Pastor Jeff was worship leader as well as speaker. Christmas carols made up most of the songs.

The sermon began with readings from 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 and from 1 Cor. 1:20-25. The apostle Paul in writing to the church in Corinth is about to address a variety of problems in that community. Many similar to the world of today. Paul’s priority was to preach “Jesus Christ and him crucified” but the account in Acts 18:1-11 gives the context that Paul had spent a year and a half in Corinth teaching the Word of God in establishing the church there.

Pastor Jeff, in his closing prayer, called for encouragement, transformation, focus on Christ and other blessings for the church.
