News from Isabel Acheson for issue of Sept. 25, 2025
Somerset Bible Chapel
After a cloudy week with many foggy mornings, Sunday morning Sept. 21 was sunny with forecasts for a week suitable for resuming harvest for the farmers and related occupations.
Rejean Picard read the announcements. Matt Penner was usher and Rick Ross read Psalm 63 as the Bible lesson.
Some of our people wear multiple hats! Kevin Friesen was in the music team, led the Prayer Focus and did the Care Package presentations to Hannah Graham and Brooke Van Den Bussche who are moving out on their own since grad last June. Jamie Small taught Adult Sunday School class, was in the music team and gave the sermon.
The songs were “This is Amazing Grace”, “What He’s Done”, “Build My Life”, “What Blessed Assurance”, “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us”, and, for the closing, “Better Is One Day” based on Psalm 84.
Jamie S. shared some of his personal story in learning about prayer and growing in his relationship to God through the years. As do many with a faith background, he was familiar with table grace at meals. Also, prayer in time of crisis. In his youth group in high school years he became acquainted with the many Psalms that are prayers.
When people find it hard to maintain focus for personal prayer, one help is to write out your prayer. Not everyone is comfortable with using pre-written prayers, but sometimes they become helpful in encouraging a person to persevere through a “dry” period. Some songs are prayers set to music that can support one’s prayer life.
Jamie S. made note of the need to replace some of the busyness of life with Silence and Solitude. He mentioned the various postures of prayer and how the physical body can be linked to the mind and desire for prayer. The practice of fasting for prayer and meditation has been a long practiced spiritual discipline.
The final portion of his sermon dealt with the Language of Prayer. “Extemporaneous” prayer relies on one putting words together as in a conversation.
The SS lesson on the book of the prophet Malachi had pointed out that to obey God was in our own best interests.
